News|The Future of The Beer Industry

Feb. 08, 2021

News|The future of the beer industry is not just a battle for high-end

In 2020, the sudden outbreak of the epidemic forced the beer industry to make adjustments to many operations, and these adjustments will continue in 2021. Such as the accelerated trend of alcohol-free, more intense competition for high-end, and the booming e-commerce.

Recently, the well-known beer industry editor Joshua M. Bernstein published an article in the beverage industry online magazine Seven Fifty Daily, and also pointed out the six major trends that will continue in 2021.

Among them, he also mentioned alcohol-free and e-commerce. Today we will take a look at the remaining four trends in the article.

01. Canned and bottled are more popular

Draft beer relies on local consumption, but the current drinking channel may take time to recover. Jack Hendler, the founder of a beer brewery in the United States, said: "For a long time, you will see a shift in sales from draft beer to canned beer."

Many breweries that make draft beer begin to fill cans to meet consumer demand. Therefore, the challenge in 2021 will be to purchase enough cans. According to Ball Corp., the global canned food manufacturing leader, this has caused a shortage of approximately 10 billion cans in 2020.

By the end of 2021, as can manufacturers expand production capacity, this shortage should be reduced. But before that, the brewery may re-produce bottled beer.

02. Outdoor space is important for restaurants

As state governments have closed beer bars and restaurants, many breweries in the United States have opened outdoor seating. Some wineries have used their large areas of pastures, while others have transformed their parking lots into beer gardens. When the weather is hot, the sprayer and fan are turned on, and when the weather is cold, there are heaters and other shelter structures.

The industry believes that in the foreseeable future, having an outdoor activity area will become the key to the success of the bar.

03. 12-piece sales continue to grow

Under the epidemic, many consumers turned to bulk purchase of toilet paper and beer, especially 12-piece beer. This type of beer is the most popular beer on the e-commerce platform Drizly, accounting for 42% of total beer sales in 2020. According to Nielsen's data, as of November last year, sales of 12-piece cans of beer increased by nearly 15%.

Many breweries in the United States are also working on 12-pack beer. Some breweries have newly launched 12-pack cans, and some have expanded their supply of 12-pack beer.

04. Go digital

Many breweries and bars have replaced paper menus with digital menus through QR codes to realize contactless ordering and payment. Jeff Smith, the founder of a US brewery, said that he plans to continue to use electronic menus because the updating and reprinting of paper menus is very troublesome. "Making your customers as easy as possible to buy your products will be the key to success in 2021."

Some technology companies are also developing new digital tools. Beermenus has launched a QR code menu tool, which has been used by more than 800 companies so far. The customer base of software company Arryved has more than doubled the number of businesses in bars and beverages, and their customers can pay bills via mobile phones.
